For our purposes - simplicity - there are two views about how difficult it is to attain enlightenment.
View 1. is that it is ridiculously easy to achieve enlightenment. However, and unfortunately, there are virtually no examples to substantiate that claim -- but there are heaps of excuses.
View 2. is that enlightenment is virtually impossible to attain. This view is seemingly easier to substantiate because there seem to be few claimants to enlightenment - at least until recently. Has enlightenment become easier to attain or simply more fashionable in the same way in which sports clothings has?
Both views are extreme. Consequently, you probably have heard about them. However, among the believers for either opinions there are very few individuals who could actually know the truth the matter because that would involve performing a suitably large study.
Although, I have been extremely interested in the subject of enlightenment for over 30 years, and conducted several (unrelated) psychological studies, I have not been able to empirically assess the validity of these two competing views either.
My information about enlightenment comes from my own life. I obtained enlightenment after 30 years of seeking and have been teaching about enlightenment for just over 7 years. My own view is that temporary enlightenment is easy to attain in the company of an enlightenment person but permanent enlightenment requires uncommon ability, awareness, energy and resolve but it is possible.
I am interested in showing seekers what they are lacking as well as what they are doing right.
One of the biggest losses of time and energy which I see seekers committing life after life is not understanding what the hidden costs of enlightenment really are. The real costs are far more than giving up your money, Mercedes, mule or marriage. In fact, you can keep them.
